Preparing to install a hardwood floor
The first thing you should do when installing the new hardwood is to remove the existing floor covering and the lowest wall trim. Clean the whole area by using a vacuum so that you are left with a dust free condition and clean substrate. The next step is to walk the floor checking for any squeaks or any sagging areas you should resecure the floor to the joist using ring shank nails or flat head screws. Once the floor is totally secured check the leveling for any bumps or dips either by your eye a straight edge or a dry line. Bumps can be sanded level with dips you can fill them with leveling compound and then sand them level.

A guide to laying out the hardwood flooring
Your new flooring should run perpendicular or across the direction of the joists. With a small room start with one wall and end at the other in a larger room start using with a center board and work out to the outer walls and always measure wall to wall across the line at several points. The walls are probably not parallel so you adjust the starter board. The floorboards are installed not to touch any walls keeping the flooring ¼ away from the baseboard will allow for expanding and contracting of the flooring.
