Painting hardwood floors is more common than you might think. If you’re worried about some nasty stains on your floor; or simply want to try something different to the plain wood look; painting can be the right answer. You’ll be surprised with what you can achieve with paint and some imagination.
There are just a few simple guidelines for painted floors. First, to know that paint alone cannot stand the wear of people walking on it; so, after all the painting has been done, you should apply three coats of clear urethane. Prefer water based urethane, as other types tend to yellow over time. And make sure each coating is completely dry before applying the next one – which can sometimes take a couple of days, depending on the paint and finish.
Painting your floor can make your house more stylish, and if you’re willing to take it further know that you can even create “faux” rugs and oriental carpets using acrylic paint and stencils. You can bet that will amaze everyone visiting your house. Not only will it look great, it’s also much easier to clean (besides not having to worry about it getting out of place). And by re-applying a urethane coating every couple of years you’ll keep that amazing “new” look for a very long time. Many people will have a hard time believing it’s wood they’re walking on.
